The Journey

The Route
Enlarge map and explore the Texas coast

On October 1, 2023, Chrissy and Jay set off on an expedition that had been nearly twenty years in the making.

High Island, one of the world’s best birding spots, rises above the surrounding marsh. Other parts of the Upper Coast struggle to keep their coastal ecosystems alive while preparing for the next major storm and fighting against rising seas.

On Galveston Island, the Klebergs step into the world of the Ghost Wolves, ancestors of the most endangered wolf on the planet. While there, they meet members of the Karankawa Kadla, a group of Native Americans who, like the red wolf, were thought extinct.

While traversing Texas’ Mid-Coast, residents come to the Klebergs aid while stressing the importance of protecting their communities and the barrier islands from the unrelenting force of the Gulf of Mexico.

As they near the end of the trek, scientists and anglers provide insight into the recovery of oysters, the state’s importance to migratory birds, and efforts to protect the smallest sea turtle in the world.

The Klebergs encountered numerous adorable pups during their journey and couldn’t resist petting each one they saw!
